DVD Review: Eli Stone The Complete first Season

Starring Johnny Lee Miller, Natasha Henstridge, Victor Garber
Created By Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim

I was honestly not looking forward to watching this series when it landed on my doorstep. Much of the basic tropes of this series have been done many many times before and with only a few exceptions I hated those shows. Highway to Heaven comes to mind as something I really don’t like. On the other hand I did really like Joan of Arcadia so there’s always hope.

The Season

Johnny Lee Miller stars as a self obsessed attorney with the great job, the nice car, and the hot girlfriend, who also happens to be his boss’ daughter. He represents large companies and makes lots of money. He’s living a stereotypical life, until one night George Michael appears to him singing his hit song “Faith”. From this point on Eli begins having visions that usually lead him to take jobs representing the underdog. So, it’s Highway to Heaven with musical and some procedural elements. Overall, this could sound like a fun distraction. …continue reading

DVD Review: The Edgar Wallace Collection Volume Two: Curse of the Yellow Snake

Directed by: Franz Josef Gottlieb
Written by: Franz Josef Gottlieb and Edgar Wallace

To be honest, I never heard of Edgar Wallace when this DVD came by my desk. I did a quick search to find that Mr. Wallace was a rather prolific writer of crime in the early 1900s. In fact, Edgar Wallace wrote the first draft of the King Kong script. That really floored me. You would think movie treatments of his work would be rousing examples of 1950s Film Noir. Well, this isn’t the case. However, this movie geek has fun with cheesy late night B movies. …continue reading

On DVD: Child’s Play – Chucky’s 20th Birthday Edition

Directed by Tom Holland

Starring Catherine Hicks, Brad Dourif

There are certain films, music, and TV from the 80′s that are iconic of the era and Child’s Play is one such bit of nostalgia. The challenge is whether the film, TV series, or piece of music should be relegated to that era as a fun memory or if it rises above the era and becomes a true classic or even a cult classic…. …continue reading

DVD Review: Dirty Sexy Money Season One

Starring Peter Kraus, Donald Sutherland, William Baldwin
Created By Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim

Desperate Housewives and Sex and the City have spurred interest in telling these kinds of high concept dramas lately and the idea of bringing in the old style family based soap opera into the fold to an almost spoofing degree sounds like a good time. Right?

The Season

Peter Kraus (Six Feet Under) plays, Nick George, an attorney whose father was the business manager for a large family of eclectic individuals all having more money than they know what to do with. When George’s father passes away the patriarch of the family, Tripp Darling (Donald Sutherland) comes to Peter and convinces him to take his father’s old job. …continue reading

DVD Review: Brian Regan: The Epitome of Hyperbole

Starring Brian Regan

Stand up comedy is very hit or miss. It seems most recent comics rely on either excessive profanity or sight gags. Thankfully, Brian Regan brings back the time honored tradition of circumstantial humor and even adds a bit of linguistic fun that this English scholar can enjoy. …continue reading

Dante proves he’s not a total loser by recognizing Virgil as the classical author of The Aeneid. Virgil informs Dante that Beatrice a late acquaintance of Dante’s has persuaded him to give Dante a tour of Hell in the hope that he will change his ways, kind of the ultimate Scared Straight. Vigil guides Dante through all nine levels of Hell.
