Directed by: Dario Argento
Starring: Tony Musante, Suzy Kendall, Eva Renzi
You either get Dario Argento or you don’t. He’s the godfather of the “giallo” style of storytelling on film. Basically, this kind of film is a horror/thriller in which a killer stalks and murders beautiful women. Other requirements to the style are POV shots of the killer’s hands in black leather gloves. Sure, it sounds simple and straightforward but when you apply lush colors and camera work, you get some groundbreaking films. Some of the most influential horror films ever made are in this style. Argento has been called the Italian Hitchcock for good reason, this style of filmmaking features shades of Hitchcock when it’s at its best. These kinds of films were the grandfathers to the slasher films of the late 70′s and early 80′s. Standout films from the director include Suspiria, Opera, and Deep Red. If you don’t get Argento, you may say he’s over indulgent and even a bit creepy and you’d be right. What you’re missing is that these are good traits. …continue reading

Directed By: John Gulager
Starring: Clu Gulager
I was a rabid fan of HBO’s and later Bravo’s Project Greenlight. In that series, a lucky writer/director was given a million dollars and the support of producing team Ben Affleck and Matt Damon to make his film come to life. The first two seasons of the series were much more interesting than the films that were actually produced. In the 3rd season, the producers were given the mandate to produce a successful film, not just create a reality show about people making a film. The idea was to do a horror film because those films nearly always make money. Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street) was brought in as an additional producer and the contest began. …continue reading

Directed by Spike Lee
Starring: Michael Ealy, Omar Benson Miller, Derek Luke, Laz Alonso
Spike Lee has made some movies I liked: 25th Hour and Do the Right Thing. He has also made some real stinkers, anyone remember Girl 6? So, where does Miracle at St. Anna fit into Lee’s filmography? Miracle at St. Anna, based on a true story, was recently released on Blu Ray by Touchstone/Disney.
The Movie
The movie opens as Hector; a senior citizen working in a post office pulls out a gun and kills what appears to be an innocent customer. When questioned by the responding police, he won’t tell why he did it. …continue reading

I really liked the first Madagascar film. Well, I really loved the penguins and if you are honest out there readers, you did to. I can almost see your silly grins from here. So, if the penguins are back, count me on. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa -Blu Ray was recently released by Dreamworks Animated.
The Movie
The whole gang is back for the sequel to this popular animated film: Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock), Alex the Lion (Ben Stiller), Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer) and Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith). Also back for another adventure are my favorites, the penguins: Skipper (Mark Mc Grath), Kowalski (Chris Miller), Private (Christopher Knights) and Rico (John DiMaggio). …continue reading

Can the guy that wrote Home on the Range and Lilo and Stitch 2: Stitch has a Glitch direct an entertaining animated film? Something that can compare with the films that come out of Pixar? Igor: Blu Ray was released on DVD by MGM and I gave it a try.
The Movie
Igor (John Cusack) is the assistant to King Malbert (Jay Leno). Malbert rules the world of mad scientists in the kingdom of Malaria (yes, you read that right) with a sense of style and a fist made of iron. There is a local science fair and Malbert is determined that he and his “Igor” are going to win. …continue reading

To celebrate Jason’s birthday we’ve assembled a few of his well, greatest hits. Below we have our current review of the Friday the 13th remake, a review of the original film on Blu-Ray, and a review of His Name Was Jason, a documentary about the man and his films. Have a great 13th!

Directed by: Marcus Nispel
Starring: Jerad Padalecki
OK, so this is not a good movie and if you expected it to be then you should just stop reading now. The setup for Friday the 13th here is the same as the original; a roller coaster ride, nothing more, nothing less. If you want or need more then go watch Silence of the Lambs. This is about exploitation and gore. So, to get a good score this film really just needs to be a good ride right?
The Movie
This remake, brought to us by the director of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, is culled from the original first four Friday the 13th movies. That may seem like a lot to cram into one film but when you take out all of the sex and kills there’s not much left in those films as far as plot. If you’re a fan of those original films you’ll be extremely surprised at just how much of the plots from the first four films is actually included here though. …continue reading

This episode of the Official CineGeek Webcast was recorded during the Twestival event held in Nashville Tennessee. Twestival isa charity event created through Twitter by Twitter users. We talked charity, and blew through the box office, Dancing with the Stars, new DVD’s, the Kindle 2, and Marvel’s big Comic con announcement with a level of drunken abandon that we hopefully won’t experience again for a while!
